Position Overview

Reporting to the Managing Director the Research Support Officer (RSO) will be responsible for helping build BCRC’s statistical knowledge and capacity. After attending a 1-week training program delivered by Statistics Canada, the (RSO) will work with a team of researchers on a project that seeks to capture the status and relative fitness of the English-Speaking Black Community (ESBC) in Quebec. They would work to create demographic profiles, infographics and analytical reports which will provide an evidence base for the organization to use in future endeavours. Additionally, they will learn about the community sector serving the English-speaking population of Quebec and may be asked to help with organizational activities over the summer.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Participate in a 1-week training program with Statistics Canada. 
  • Conduct surveys and collect data, using methods such as interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, consultations and, literature reviews.
  • Analyze data from surveys, old records, and/or case studies, using statistical software programs.
  • Prepare and present summaries and analyses of survey data, including tables, graphs, and fact sheets that describe survey techniques and results.
  • Maintain accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary.
  • Offer research-based briefings and advice, which may involve writing action plans
  • Contribute to research and policy reports, as well as internal documents. This includes working with others to develop conclusions and recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain relations with key stakeholders and interlocutors in order to build networks through which to learn and to share advocacy messages 
  • Manage project’s social media account
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

  • Degree in a social-science-related discipline;
  • Knowledge of study design, data management
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts of collecting and processing research data.
  • Excellent economic / statistical / quantitative / qualitative research skills
  • Ability to use quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis software packages 
  • (Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Proficiency in the preparation of publications, reports, presentations
  • Experience in an applied social research environment 
  • Research skills including; document and literature reviews; supporting quantitative and qualitative data collection; data entry, coding and analysis; table/graphics; proofreading; technical report writing
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and age
  • Knowledge and experience in community development and  intercultural engagement
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French  language skills would be considered an asset
  • Can work with a team and support project activities as needed

QWF Seeks Communications Assistant (8‐week contract)

The Quebec Writers’ Federation (QWF) is seeking a reliable, detail‐oriented, and motivated young person
between the ages of 15 and 30 for an eight‐week position as Communications Assistant in the QWF Office in
the Atwater Library and Computer Centre, Westmount, in June and July 2019. Supervision, training and
mentorship will be provided by Rachel McCrum, QWF Communications and Membership Coordinator, and Lori
Schubert, Executive Director. The job would particularly suit someone interested in arts management and/or
communications, and would provide invaluable career‐related experience.
 Start date: ***10 June, 2019 TBC***
 Length of contract: 8 weeks
 Hours: 30 hours a week, to be spread over 4 days (10am – 530pm)
 Salary: $12.50 an hour
Primary responsibilities
 Compile, assemble, and send out the monthly QWF e‐newsletter detailing upcoming opportunities,
submissions deadlines, residencies etc.
 Prepare and disseminate e‐communications and social media updates for the QWF, maintaining a
professional and engaging tone throughout.
 Update the news feed on the QWF Website by researching and creating relevant news articles, and
interviewing at least 2 local authors/QWF Members to create original content.
 Update the QWF contacts database to input information on community and outreach groups, and other
special interest groups, and to undertake some reporting on these groups.
 Organize and upload the zine content from the Writers in the Community project with at‐risk youth in
order to disseminate and promote this creative work.
Requirements
 Must be aged 15 to 30 (please note: the funding is no longer contingent on the successful applicant
being a student.)
 Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been
conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
 Must have a valid Social Insurance Number and be entitled to work in Canada in accordance with
relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
 Must have an excellent command of written English, and conversational French for telephone.
 Must be able to work autonomously to organize and prioritize tasks.
 Must demonstrate an ability to write, edit and proofread your own documents for accuracy and correct
spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
 Experience with Facebook and Twitter.
Additional assets
 Experience with Mailchimp, WordPress, and Salesforce.
 Familiarity and enthusiasm for Quebec’s English‐language literary scene.
